Summary

Block plans of Invercargill by architect Frederick William Burwell. Featuring the name and occupation of many of the owners or occupiers.

Order of blocks: South side of Tay from Doon to the Crescent, up the West side of Dee (first two blocks missing) to Gala. North side of Tay from Doon to Dee, up East side of Dee to Gala.

Biographical / Historical

Frederick William Burwell was born in Scotland in 1846. He came to New Zealand and was working as an architect in Queenstown by 1873, before moving to Invercargill in 1874.

He was prolific during the boom of the 1870s and 1880s, designing Renaissance style buildings that helped shape a grand business district. He is repsonsible for much of the Crescent and Dee Street, including the former Bank of New Zealand, the former Briscoe and Company...
Building, the former White Swan Hotel, the old Hospital, and St Paul's Presbyterian Church.

In 1880 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He left Invercargill in 1887 after a slowdown in business and spent time in Melbourne, Perth and Freemantle. He died in Melbourne in 1915.
